Multifocal Lens Implantation

View 3D VideoMany older Americans can't imagine being able to work on the computer, drive, read or play sports without the assistance of glasses. That is because one of the unfortunate side effects of aging is deterioration in vision. At around the age of 40, most people begin to see the first signs of presbyopia, which makes it particularly difficult to read up close. This decreased ability for the eye to adjust and focus at different distances is what causes the need for bifocals or even trifocals.

Intraocular lenses are implantable lenses that replace your own lens after surgical removal. Traditionally, this takes place during cataract surgery, but more and more patients are undergoing intraocular lens implantation for correction of presbyopia. In the past, these lenses only offered one power, which meant patients would still require glasses either for near vision or for distance vision. The newer multifocal lenses however, correct vision at multiple ranges, offering patients greater freedom from glasses in most cases.

Your Las Vegas Multifocal IOL Procedure

The intraocular lens (IOL) procedure is typically performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia and in some cases can be completed in less than 30 minutes. The natural lens is removed through a small, self-healing incision, and the new IOL is put in place through the same incision.

You should be able to resume normal, light activity within a day of surgery, but will be advised against any activities which raise blood pressure or increase pressure in the eyes. It is also important that you avoid rubbing the eyes. Your ophthalmologist may give you a clear shield to wear over the eyes to prevent this. The full extent of your vision correction may not be apparent for several weeks, but most patients find that after recovery they do not require glasses or contact lenses.
